Red, White & Blue Burger Dog
By Danny Boome & Lauren Palmeri
Serves 8
Made in a Cast Iron Skillet
Ingredients
1 Tbsp butter
1 package top-sliced hot dog buns
1 Tbsp neutral oil
1 lb ground beef
Toppings (optional)
Caramelized onions and peppers
Blue cheese crumbles
Ketchup and mayonnaise
Method
- Form ground meat into a 1-inch thick square patty. Cut patty into rectangular-shaped pieces, the length of the hot dog bun and 2 ½-inches wide. Season all sides of meat with salt and pepper.
- Heat butter in cast iron skillet over medium heat. Add hot dog buns and toast on tops and sides until golden-brown. Remove to a plate and set aside.
- Heat oil in cast iron skillet over medium-high until just smoking. Add beef patties and cook until seared on both sides, about 8 minutes total for medium doneness. Remove to a plate and set aside.
To build a Burger Dog, fill a toasted bun with a cooked burger dog patty and top with desired toppings. Enjoy!
For the onions and peppers: Heat 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high. Add one large sliced white onion and two sliced bell peppers. Season with salt and pepper, and saute until vegetables begin to brown. Turn heat to low and continue cooking until soft and caramelized, about 20 minutes. Remove from heat.
